Writer's picture: Sangminn LeeSangminn Lee

This article is a continued version of the previous article that I have written, 'Unpopular' Films that will Blow Your Mind (Part 1). If you have not read the first article, it is recommended to read it first before reading this article.

Musical - The Last Five Years (2015)

I remember watching this film in the theater alone, which means that this film did not gain commercial success. It is an independent film starring Anna Kendrick, best known for her role in Twilight series and Pitch Perfect series. If you have seen Pitch Perfect series, you will be able to know Anna Kendrick's amazing voice. In this film, her voice and act gives the viewers chills. Also, Jeremy Jordan supports the film with great acting skills from his Broadway experience.

This film is a remake version of a Broadway musical of a same title. The story-line is simple, where it shows the literal 'The Last Five Years' of each others' relationship until break-up. The timeline of both actors starts from opposite way, and overlaps in the middle of the film. And I was amazed by how they transitioned this timeline. Though it might be a bit depressing film for those who just had issues with their relationship, the song numbers are breath-taking. You will not be able to imagine that this was produced in a very low budget, because the quality is like a normal commercial film.

Romance - Me and Earl and the Dying Girl (2015)

I watched this film when a friend of mine recommended this film. The concept of this film is similar to the successful film 'The Fault in Our Stars (2014)'. This film does not just portray about love between two characters where one character is diagnosed a severe disease. It portrays how school life and people's eyes matters for high school students, and how to get over these circumstances even in hard times.

Me and Earl and the Dying Girl successfully portrays the negative side, but also manages to convey the romantic story-line where it makes you think about how you may have treated people, and lets you think again about people who just passed by in your life. People that might have been important to you but you might have noticed.

Science Fiction - Cloverfield (2008)

I am not really a fan of Science Fiction films, especially those with aliens invading the Earth. However, this film changed my perception of alien invasion films, because it was shot with 1st person point of view angles, making the film look very realistic, as if a real alien invaded the Earth. However, the only negative effect of this film is that you will feel very dizzy after watching it due to the shakiness of the film. This film really just portrays the real-time footage of what is happening in New York in a perspective of normal people.

You may have watched '10 Cloverfield Lane (2016)', and this film is in the same cinematic universe. However, many people does not know about this because the story-line is very different from the first film. If you like to watch the creative side of Science Fiction Films, watch this, and it will literally blow your mind, and be a fan of Cloverfield Universe.

Thriller - We Need to Talk About Kevin (2011)

I remember being very, i mean totally shocked watching this film (I am just saying I was really shocked in repetitive way). Ezra Miller and Tilda Swinton plays as son and mother in this film. I cannot reveal much about this film, but it is about a viral issue going on until now, school shootings in America. By watching these two actors act, you will not be able to focus on other stuffs, but just be into this film.

I've watched Tilda Swinton in many films, but in this film, I was able to relate to her emotional status in this film through her marvelous act. Of course, if you want to see the crazy (in a positive way) act done by Ezra Miller, I would recommend this film more than any other films.

War - First They Killed My Father (2017)

This film is a Cambodian Language film directed by a famous actress in Hollywood, Angelina Jolie. She does not appear in the film, but plays a big role portraying the situation in Cambodia during the cold war days. It follows the trail of a young Cambodian girl who is forced to separate with her family and joins the rebel military group of Cambodia. It is based on true story, showing the sad truth of wars, letting people know what happened in Cambodia.

I was amazed by how Angelina Jolie managed to direct a film that speaks in different language in a very effective way. She was able to direct the whole film conveying the message. I think she herself researched a lot before the film. That is why this quality of film came out. If you are interested to watch this film, it is being streamed in Netflix.

So here are all the 13 genres of unpopular films that the readers of Unfiltered Perspectives would not have watched. What I want to say to the readers is that please try watching independent films, because it means a lot to the film-makers. As a film-makers myself, I get overwhelmed whenever people mention that they have watched my film, whether they liked it or not. Please remember that films are not produced just for commercial success, but also for passion of the film-makers.
